How I Start DP2 IB Business: Revision Kahoots, Finance, and Starters

Every year when DP2 begins, I find myself in the same spot: looking for the best way to get my students back into IB Business after the long summer. Over the years, I’ve learned that how you start DP2 matters. It sets the tone, reminds students of what they’ve already mastered, and helps them switch their brains back into “IB mode.”

For me, the answer has always been revision activities.

Starting DP2 with Revision Kahoots

I always kick off DP2 with Kahoots on Unit 1 and Unit 4. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to bring students back into the subject while reviewing key concepts they saw a long time ago. If you’re curious why I teach the units in this order, I’ve written about my reasoning here: Am I Teaching the Business Units in the Right Order?

But, these Kahoots have been on my “fix this” list for years. The old versions had problems: outdated syllabus content, spelling errors, questions with no points, and even a few topics missing. Every September I told myself, next year I’ll fix them. But of course, September would come again, and I’d just use the same versions.

This year I finally sat down and updated them (after I played them one last time with mistakes). Now, instead of scrambling with sub-par starters, I know my Kahoots are current, accurate, and ready to go. Students probably never noticed the mistakes, they’re just happy to play, but for me, having them polished takes the stress away.

Here are the updated Kahoots if you would like to use them too:

Speaking of checking things off my to-do list, I finally finished my Unit 1 starters. Like the Kahoots, they’d been on my list for years, and having them done feels like such a relief. If you want to skip that task altogether, you can buy the Unit 1 Starters here.

Reinforcing Finance Before Moving Forward

After the Kahoots (and now, the peace of mind of having my starters ready), my next DP2 step is always a finance review. By the end of DP1, my classes usually reach around Unit 3.5 or 3.6, so it makes sense to revisit sources of finance and financial statements before pushing ahead. I use a finance review packet for this, and then we launch into the Finance Project.

This sequence has worked well because it helps students recall essential finance knowledge while easing back into the analytical mindset IB Business requires. It is not new content yet, but it is a confidence builder before we dive into the heavier parts of DP2.

Why This Matters

When you are thinking about how to start DP2 IB Business, it is easy to focus on the big picture: course coverage, IA deadlines, Paper 3 prep. But the small things at the beginning of the year make a huge difference. A few well-planned revision activities for DP2 help students feel confident, remind them of what they already know, and set a positive tone for the year ahead.

For me, updating my revision Kahoots and finishing my starters means I can start the year organized and confident too. No more wishing I had time to fix them, no more settling for “good enough.” Just resources I know will work every September.
